SUMMARY:Weaving with Barks and Local Natural Materials
DESCRIPTION:This course has Filled Up! Feel free to fill out the Registration Form and you will automatically be on the Waitlist. It often happens that a space comes available. If I am able to run this course again in 2026\, I’ll contact people on the Waitlist first. \nThroughout millennia\, the tradition of basket making has always been closely tied to the natural world around us. Nature offers an abundance of beautiful materials as well as inspiration for the basket maker. Tree Barks will be a focus for this basket\, however\, we will have a wide variety of materials to explore and discuss. \nOn Day One of this course\, we will begin hands-on with how to respectfully harvest and prepare a wide variety of plants including tree barks\, sedges and rushes\, vines\, and plant leaves. Participants will process and prepare western red cedar and willow bark for their own basket. We will also make cordage with a variety of material on hand. \nOn Day Two\, we will cover the principles of how to design a basket in terms of shape\, size\, and pattern possibilities. A variety of weaving patterns will be presented for students to incorporate in their basket including plaiting\, twill and twining variations. Sample baskets will be on hand for inspiration. \nTo Register: Fill out this form \nOpen to all levels of experience \nDate: Saturday June 13  & Sunday June 14\, 2026 \nTime: 9:30 am – 4:00 pm \nLocation: Salt Spring Lions Hall\, 103 Bonnet Ave. Ganges\, Salt Spring Is. \nFee: $330 + GST= $346.50   Payment details will be given when you register for the course with Joan.

SUMMARY:An Exploration of Twining with Rush and Soft Materials 2-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This course has Filled Up! Feel free to fill out the Registration Form and you will automatically be on the Waitlist. It often happens that a space comes available. If I am able to run this course again in 2026\, I’ll contact people on the Waitlist first. \nTwining is a foundational weaving technique and one of my favourite ways to explore pattern and shaping. In this weekend workshop\, we’ll create two projects. \nOn the first day\, we’ll work with rush/tule to weave an open‑weave twined basket. This project introduces regular twining in a spiraling open weave and offers an exploration of shaping\, increasing and decreasing spokes\, and can be finished off with a leather shoulder strap or rush side handles to make a beautiful purse you’re sure to treasure. \nOn the second day\, we’ll make a round-base basket with cedar bark spokes\, that allows us to dive into fine twining and explore a range of regular and reverse twining variations\, as well as multi-strand twining. Materials on hand will include sedge\, daylily leaves\, willow and cedar bark\, and waxed threads. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment\, explore the many pattern possibilities\, as you design your own basket with inspiration from the samples and techniques presented. \nTo Register: Fill out this Form \nOpen to All Levels of experience \nDate: Saturday July 4 & Sunday July 5\, 2026 \nTime: 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nRegistration Fee: $350 + GST = $367.50 \nLocation: Salt Spring Lions Hall\, 103 Bonnet Ave.\, Salt Spring Is. BC
