This time you will be guided through the process of creating a version of the “Cat’s Head” basket woven with Willow and Cedar bark. This basket has a distinctive shape and has a continuous twill pattern adding to its elegance. It starts with a square base and moves to a round form which sits on four-pointed base corners. The size is approximately 4.5” round x 5.5” high. \nTo Register Fill Out This Form \nThis is not a beginner basket. DESCRIPTION:How wonderful it is to be able to weave your very own Sun Hat using beautiful soft Rushes. Participants will make their own hat mold from instructions provided ahead of time and this will ensure that your hat fits you perfectly. The hat will be woven using plain weave and twining\, with a braid like border. Students will be able to determine the depth of the crown\, plus the shape and size of the brim. The rewards are always visible at the end of the day when each person’s hat seems to suit them perfectly. Nature offers an abundance of beautiful materials as well as inspiration for the basket maker. Tree Barks will be a focus for this basket\, however\, we will have a wide variety of materials to explore and discuss. \nOn Day One of this course\, we will begin hands-on with how to respectfully harvest and prepare a wide variety of plants including tree barks\, sedges and rushes\, vines\, and plant leaves. Participants will process and prepare western red cedar and willow bark for their own basket. The 4 projects we will make employ twining\, coiling\, knotless netting and knotting. The materials we will use include cedar bark\, willow bark\, day lily leaves\, waxed linen thread and yarn. These techniques are well suited to either jewelry or basketry forms. It starts with a square base and moves to a round form which sits on four-pointed base corners. This is a traditional Shaker style basket with many variations on its shape and size and makes a beautiful storage basket. This version has a continuous twill pattern adding to its elegance. The size is approximately 11” wide x 8” high. \nSuitable for all levels.

If there is enough interest I will the class again at a future date. \nThroughout millennia\, the tradition of basket making has always been closely tied to the natural world around us. Nature offers an abundance of beautiful materials as well as inspiration for the basket maker. Tree Barks will be a focus for this basket\, however\, we will have a wide variety of materials to explore and discuss. \nOn Day One of this course\, we will begin hands-on with how to respectfully harvest and prepare a wide variety of plants including tree barks\, sedges and rushes\, vines\, and plant leaves. Participants will process and prepare western red cedar and willow bark for their own basket. We will also make cordage with a variety of material on hand. \nOn Day Two\, we will cover the principles of how to design a basket in terms of shape\, size\, and pattern possibilities. A variety of weaving patterns will be presented for students to incorporate in their basket including plaiting\, twill and twining variations. This version has 2 round oak hoops forming the handle and opening of the basket. We will be using natural and dyed reed along with seagrass and cordage. Although seagrass will be on hand\, participants will learn how to make their own cordage from local plant materials and will have the option to incorporate it in their basket. This basket is suitable for all levels. \n
