An Exploration of Twining with Rush and Soft Materials 2-Day Workshop

This course has Filled Up! Feel free to fill out the Registration Form and you will automatically be on the Waitlist. It often happens that a space comes available. If I am able to run this course again in 2026, I’ll contact people on the Waitlist first.
Twining is a foundational weaving technique and one of my favourite ways to explore pattern and shaping. In this weekend workshop, we’ll create two projects.
On the first day, we’ll work with rush/tule to weave an open‑weave twined basket. This project introduces regular twining in a spiraling open weave and offers an exploration of shaping, increasing and decreasing spokes, and can be finished off with a leather shoulder strap or rush side handles to make a beautiful purse you’re sure to treasure.
On the second day, we’ll make a round-base basket with cedar bark spokes, that allows us to dive into fine twining and explore a range of regular and reverse twining variations, as well as multi-strand twining. Materials on hand will include sedge, daylily leaves, willow and cedar bark, and waxed threads. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment, explore the many pattern possibilities, as you design your own basket with inspiration from the samples and techniques presented.
